Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers could not stop Mycal Jones.
Somerset's center fielder sped his way to the tying and winning runs on Friday night as the Patriots tripped up the 'Stormers, 4-3, in the second game of a four-game series at TD Bank Park.
Lancaster falls to 2-2 in the second half while the Patriots improve to 4-1.
With Lancaster up, 3-2, Jones rolled a slow ground ball toward the hole at shortstop to start the eighth and beat Lance Zawadzki's strong throw to first. He advanced to second on a bunt by Eric Farris. With David Vidal at the plate, Pete Andrelczyk snapped a breaking ball into the dirt. Jones read it, and beat Charlie Cutler's rushed throw to third. Vidal eventually walked, and, with Mike McDade holding the runner at first, Bryan LaHair chopped a ball over his head to drive home the tying run.
Andrelczyk worked out of the inning with a double play, keeping the game tied. In the 10th, with Scott Gracey (2-6) on the mound, Jones again stepped to the forefront. He lined a one-out single into right and stole second, beating a pitchout. Farris was walked intentionally, but the duo pulled off a double steal. Lancaster motioned Vidal to first, bringing up LaHair. The Somerset first baseman rapped a ground ball on the right side. Jeff Kobernus made a diving stop but could only get a force out at second as Jones steamed home with the winning run.
All three Lancaster runs scored on one swing of the bat. Following singles by Sean Halton and Cutler in the fifth, K.C. Hobson lined a three-run homer down the right field line, his second three-run blast of the series.
That home run erased the lead the Patriots picked up off starter Mike Lee in the fourth as Matt Fields and Brian Van Kirk stroked consecutive one-out RBI singles.
Lee worked seven innings, yielding six hits and two runs. He never struck out a batter. His mound opponent, Will Oliver, also worked seven innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Jeremy McBryde (6-3) earned the win with a scoreless 10th inning, picking up three outs after a leadoff single by Hobson.
The series continues on Saturday with Bryan Evans (3-4) on the hill for Lancaster against Somerset's Donovan Hand (2-1). Fans may tune into the Lancaster Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Halton hit safely for the 10th straight game...Hobson is 4-for-6 with two homers and six RBI in the series...Blake Gailen was 2-for-3 before leaving the game in the fifth inning...He doubled in the first, giving him second on Lancaster's all-time list with 87...The game was delayed 28 minutes by rain before it started as heavy rains hit Central New Jersey around 4:30, and showers continued through 6:30.
