JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Rick VandenHurk and three relievers scattered five hits to shut down the Jacksonville offensive attack, leading the Carolina Mudcats (45-38, 7-6) to a 4-1 Tuesday victory over the Jacksonville Suns (39-44, 6-7) in front of 4,167 at the Baseball Grounds.

Carolina now leads the season series against Jacksonville 14 games to seven.

The Mudcats snapped Jacksonville starter Jesus Castillo's twelve and one-thirds innings scoreless streak two batters into the first inning as Manuel Mayorson doubled home Cameron Maybin for a 1-0 lead. Chris Coghlan next singled home Maybin for a 2-0 advantage. Gaby Sanchez then singled to put two on with no outs. With the runners moving, Lee Mitchell lined out to shortstop Ivan DeJesus, Jr. who flipped to the second baseman Shane Justis at the bag for the second out, before a tag of the last runner resulted in an inning-ending triple play. The triple play was the first for the Suns since May 18, 2003 at Greenville.

Jacksonville's Lucas May belted his tenth homerun of the season, a solo shot, off Carolina starter Rick VandenHurk with one out in the second inning to cut the Mudcats lead to 2-1.

Carolina went back to work in the third inning, as Manuel Mayorson scored on an Andy Jenkins fielder's choice for a 3-1 lead. Cameron Maybin singled home Grant Psomas, who had led off the fourth inning with a triple, for a 4-1 advantage.

Mudcats starter Rick VandenHurk (3-1) allowed one run, two hits and four walks over five innings while striking out seven. Carolina relievers Willie Glen, Jesus Delgado and Chris Mobley combined to pitch four scoreless innings, allowing one hit each. Mobley (14) saved the game with a one-hit ninth inning.

Suns starter Jesus Castillo (5-4) gave up four runs on ten hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings in the loss. Relievers Jacobo Meque and Danny Muegge each pitched two scoreless innings.
