Mobile BayBears News Release
HOOVER, Ala. - Prior to their ballgame with the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday night, it was announced that five members of the Mobile BayBears were named to the South Division All-Star team for the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. on Monday, July 14.
Second baseman Rusty Ryal is the anchor of a BayBear infield that is sending three of its four regulars to Carolina. Ryal is batting .298 this season with a team-high 11 home runs and 46 RBI. His double play partner, Yunesky Sanchez, is also making the trip as he takes a .309 average to the league's Midsummer Classic. Sanchez was also an All-Star last season for South Bend in the Midwest League.
Bryan Byrne has been slick with the glove all season for the BayBears at first base, and he'll also represent Mobile in Carolina. Byrne leads the ball club with a .310 average and .410 on-base percentage. BayBear closer Reid Mahon has been perfect in his 18 save opportunities this season and has put up a stellar 3.07 ERA in 41 innings. He joins Barons closer Jon Link and Mississippi Braves closer Luis Valdez in the South Division bullpen.
Matt Torra was also called to the All-Star roster but won't appear in Carolina because he has since been promoted to Triple-A Tucson. With the BayBears, Torra was 5-5 with a 2.85 ERA in 79 innings. He is still currently tied for fifth in the Southern League among ERA leaders.
The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Friday, the fourth of July, to take on the Jacksonville Suns at 7:05 p.m. For more information, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
