Mobile BayBears News Release

HOOVER, Ala. - To wrap up the month of June, the BayBears saw a 2-0 lead get away which turned into a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to the Birmingham Barons on Monday night at Regions Park, ending the BayBears' attempt at a season-high fourth straight win.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, a baserunning mistake by the Barons (47-36, 7-6) came up smelling like a rose as Victor Mercedes was caught in a rundown and was about to be tagged out until Bryan Byrne had the ball slip out of his glove causing Miguel Negron, who was on third, to score the go-ahead run. Mercedes later touched home on a single by Ricardo Nanita, giving Birmingham a two-run lead.

Cyle Hankerd knocked home two runs for the BayBears (35-48, 6-7) with singles in the fifth and ninth innings, but Jon Link (S, 22) would leave Hankerd stranded at first while the final out was recorded on a John Hester fly out. The loss spoiled a great outing from Tony Barnette (4-7), who lasted 7.1 innings while allowing three earned runs and fanning seven.

Dewon Day started for the Barons and pitched three perfect frames before giving way to lefty Ryan O'Malley (2-2) who anchored five innings. Game two of the four-game set is Tuesday night at 7:05 with Adam Howard (6-5, 4.76) making the start against 2007 first-round pick Aaron Poreda (0-2, 5.00).

With the Fourth of July weekend just days away, the BayBears are offering three nights of fireworks at "The Hank." On Thursday, July 3, the Mayor's Cup between the Mobile Police and Fire Departments will be decided at Hank Aaron Stadium. The following two nights will feature the BayBears playing the Jacksonville Suns on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5. Call for tickets at (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
