HOOVER, Ala. - For the second straight night, the BayBears received solid starting pitching but let a slim lead slip away late in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday at Regions Park.

Orlando Mercado's two-out, two-strike RBI single in the top of the fifth broke a scoreless tie and allowed Adam Howard to pitch with the lead for the first time all night. Howard worked into the seventh when the Barons (48-36, 8-6) tied the game on an RBI by Erick San Pedro before giving way to Abe Woody (1-3), who helped get Howard out of trouble with an inning-ending double play, leaving the go-ahead man on third.

In the bottom of the eighth, Woody wouldn't have the same fortunes. Victor Mercedes reached on a catcher's interference call, and Javier Colina put Birmingham in front with a two-run homer. Per usual, the BayBears (35-49, 6-8) weren't going to be beaten without a ninth-inning struggle.

Three ninth-inning singles plated a run and put the tying tally on second for Cyle Hankerd, who singled to left. With Rusty Ryal racing for the plate, Ricardo Nanita's throw was just in time for San Pedro to tag Ryal and end the ballgame. Hector Ambriz (5-9, 5.48) will attempt to get the BayBears their first win of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. while the Barons counter with All-Star Carlos Torres (8-4, 3.25).

With the Fourth of July weekend just days away, the BayBears are offering three nights of fireworks at "The Hank." On Thursday, July 3, the Mayor's Cup between the Mobile Police and Fire Departments will be decided at Hank Aaron Stadium. The following two nights will feature the BayBears playing the Jacksonville Suns on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5. Call for tickets at (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
