Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA â The Reading Royals, affiliates of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and AHL's Manchester Monarchs, have announced that third-year professional Ian Turner and big right winger Peter Hay will be returning to the club for the 2004-05 season. Turner was the only Royal to appear in all 87 games during the 2003-04 campaign (72 regular season, 15 postseason). Rookie Peter Hay provided consistent scoring for the Royals leading the club in game-winning goals (6).
Belleville, Ontario native Ian Turner nearly doubled his point output from his rookie campaign. Turner fired in seven goals and 29 points, while also adding a goal and five points in the Kelly Cup playoffs. 12 of his 29 points were scored on the power play. Turner, in just his second professional season, set new career marks in the following categories; games played (72), goals (7), assists (22), points (29), PIMs (80), power play goals (4) and +/- rating (5).
"Ian is definitely a player that developed from his rookie season in Richmond," commented coach Derek Clancey. "He was a great utility player for us. We used him in all situations and he responded as one of our most productive defenseman."
Abbotsford, British Columbia native Peter Hay made his professional debut in 2003-04. Hay turned in a successful campaign registering 20 goals and 37 points in 62 regular season contests. He finished tied for fourth in goals scored and sixth on the team in scoring. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound forward suited up for ten games in the postseason scoring a goal and three points. Hay also appeared in seven games in the American Hockey League with Worcester and Hartford but was held scoreless.
Royals general manager Ray Delia said he is extremely excited to have two returning players from last year's squad signed, "Both Ian and Peter had a very productive 2003-2004 and we expect to see continued development from each of them this season. We are excited to have both players return to the Royals organization and look forward to a successful 04-05 season."
In addition to instructing hockey clinics in Vancouver, the Royals right-winger will be appearing in Bell's Making the Cut, a reality show featuring aspiring pro hockey players. Hay is one of 60 hockey players that qualified to appear in the CBC televised program. Six winners will be chosen to fulfill their dream of attending a National Hockey League training camp. Taping is set to begin on July 15 in select Canadian cities and the program will air beginning September 15.
Hay is excited about his busy summer and rejoining the Royals, "I am going to be busy this summer, plus I will be skating a lot which is important. Last season was great for me. I enjoyed playing in Reading for the fans, and the great group of core players we had on the team. It was a lot of fun. I want to continue playing for a solid successful organization."
To date the Royals have three players under contract for the 2004-05 season. Defensemen Simon Mangos and Turner along with forward Peter Hay.
The Reading Royals are entering their fourth season in Reading, Pennsylvania after relocating from Columbus, Ohio. The Royals enjoyed their first Kelly Cup playoff appearance last season, claiming the Northern Division Title and were one win away from qualifying for the Kelly Cup Finals. The Royals and the City of Reading are proud to be hosting the 13th annual ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition presented by Coors Light on January 25 and 26.
