Lynx Assistant GM Taking Team To Georgia Games
July 7, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
For the first time in the 14-year history of the Georgia Games, an Augusta-area team will compete in inline hockey at the 2004 Games to be held in Atlanta July 9-18.
The Augusta Junior Lynx 10-and-under roller hockey team, coached by Lynx Assistant General Manager Rob Mueller and Lynx Season Ticket Holder and sponsor Brad Harris, will compete in the tournament against teams from across Georgia. The hockey competition is sanctioned by USA Hockey Inline â the national governing body of the sport â and will be held July 15-17 at The Cooler, and indoor ice and inline skating facility located in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta.
The youth team will compete in the Georgia Games wearing official Lynx jerseys, courtesy of Passport International, the official merchandise vendor of the Augusta Lynx.
The 13-player team features the top players from The Family Y's Inline Hockey League. The Family Y program was launched in April 2003 and featured more than 70 players from the Augusta area this past season.
"The Family Y inline program really started to take off this past spring as more and more local kids started to come out and give the game a try," said Mueller, whose 7-year-old son, Jake, was the leading scorer in The Family Y Inline league the past two seasons and is a member of the Junior Lynx squad. "Many of our players and their families are longtime Lynx fans, and they have taken their love of hockey to a new level now that they are involved. We've seen the skill level of the players grow over the past year, and we felt the kids were ready to take their game to the next level and compete in the Georgia Games."
After coaching their team to The Family Y Inline League 10-and-under division championship in April, Mueller and Harris selected the best players in the league in assembling the Junior Lynx inline all-star team to take to Atlanta. The team is made up of 11 boys and two girls ranging in ages from 7 to 10.
The Junior Lynx have been gearing up for the Georgia Games since early June, practicing twice a week, sometimes in the sweltering heat, at the Augusta Roller Hockey Rink on Central Avenue behind Daniel Village. The team will hold three more practices, this Thursday and Saturday, and Wednesday, July 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All local media is encouraged to attend.
The Lynx are one of several area businesses sponsoring the team to help defray the costs of uniforms, travel and lodging expenses and Georgia Games entry fees. Other local sponsors include Georgia Bank and Trust, Color Works Painting, Spray Solutions, Dino's Chicago Express, County Electric Supply, Gerald Robinson's Paint, The Sports Authority, and Ron "Rabbit" Owenby of REO Painting. Local businesses interested in sponsoring the Augusta Junior Lynx roller hockey team may contact Harris at (706) 825-5704 for more information.
The Georgia Games is a sports festival created for Georgia's amateur athletes. Patterned after the Olympics, the 2004 Georgia Games Championships will consist of sports providing Georgia's amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels a meaningful opportunity to participate in a true amateur sport championship.
