Knoxville Smokies News Release
The Chicago Cubs announced a series of transactions that impacts their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies roster prior to tonight's contest with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium in Pensacola, Fla.
Outfielder Jorge Soler has been placed on the seven-day Disabled List. The Cuba native smacked a double in his first Double-A at bat for the Smokies last night against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos before exiting the contest. In 55 games last season for High-A Daytona, the 22-year-old accumulated a .281 average (59-210) with eight homers and 35 RBI.
In a corresponding move, right-handed reliever Frank Batista has been transferred to Tennessee from Extended Spring Training. The 24-year-old returns to the Smokies after appearing in 48 outings out of the bullpen last year, recording a 3-3 mark and 2.60 ERA (18 ER in 62.1 IP) with 19 saves, which ranked tied for second in the Southern League in 2013.
The Smokies roster now stands at 25.
Tennessee returns to action tonight for the second game of their five-game set against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Baseball America's 28th-best overall prospect, right-hander C.J. Edwards, is expected to start and make his Double-A debut tonight for the Smokies, while right-hander Daniel Corcino is scheduled to oppose Edwards for Pensacola. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
Tennessee's 2014 home slate starts on Wednesday, April 9 versus the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch for the home opener at Smokies Stadium is set for 7:15 p.m. Season tickets, along with multi-game and single-game tickets, are still available and can be purchased at the Smokies Ticket Office at Smokies Stadium, online at smokiesbaseball.com, or by calling (865) 286-2300.
