Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

After the Blue Wahoos and Smokies belted 11 runs and 17 hits last night, a pair of pitching prospects shut down the bats as Tennessee escaped with a 1-0 victory. The Smokies didn't so much win the pitcher's duel as outlast Pensacola, limiting the Wahoos to four hits and allowing only seven runners to reach. Phenom Kris Bryant slashed a solo home run in the seventh inning, his second round-tripper in as many nights. The one run proved to be enough as the Smokies' bullpen preserved the lead and evened the series. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:

BROXTON COMES BACK: Jonathan Broxton made his first professional appearance since August 21. The Reds' reliever threw one inning, hitting a batter while striking out two. Broxton, expected to start tomorrow night, saw his season cut short by a right forearm injury. His battery mate, rehabbing catcher Devin Mesoraco, finished 0-for-3.

CLASSIC CORCINO: Daniel Corcino was on point in his return to Pensacola, scattering two hits over six innings and striking out eight batters. In a strong relief effort, Corcino retired 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. The outing was his first game back in a Blue Wahoos uniform since August 31, 2012.

SWING AND A MISS: Pitchers found the zone early and often tonight, especially for third strikes. The staffs combined for 24 strikeouts, including 21 swings and misses. C.J. Edwards headlined the Smokies' staff with four strikeouts in his Double-A debut, while Corcino led the Wahoos with eight whiffs. In all, Pensacola dealt 14 strikeouts, which challenged a team record.

FRESH FACES: Fans got their first glimpse of the next generation of Wahoos as two position players made their Wahoo debuts. Shortstop Rey Navarro, an offseason acquisition through free agency, finished 1-for-4 with a strikeout and an infield single. Juan Duran, a member of the Reds' 40-man roster, started in right field but did not reach.

Game three of the opening series continues tomorrow at 6:30 PM with Jonathan Broxton again pitching one inning. Robert Stephenson, rated as the Reds' top prospect by Baseball America, will take the hill in relief. The Fur Circus returns and all fans can pick up magnet schedules at the gate courtesy of Andrews Institute and WEAR ABC 3. Stick around for postgame fireworks presented by Pepsi and Marcus Pointe Baptist Church.
