Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
Amarillo, TEXAS - The Amarillo Sod Poodles were defeated by the San Antonio Missions by a final score of 7-4 in the series finale on Sunday, April 24 at HODGETOWN. The Missions won the final two games of the series, the first back-to-back losses by Amarillo this season.
San Antonio out-hit Amarillo and were powered by two home runs, despite the Sod Poodles pitching staff tying the single-game franchise record with 16 strikeouts. The Sod Poodles hit two home runs and scored three in the bottom of the 9th.
No. 10 Diamondbacks prospect Brandon Pfaadt took the mound and started off the game on a high note by striking out the side in the 1st. He allowed two singles in the 2nd, but struck out another three batters, recording the first six outs of the game via strikeouts (five swinging).
Pfaadt ran into some trouble in the 3rd, where the Missions put up two runs. The first two batters reached on a walk and a hit-by-pitch, and back-to-back singles plated two.
Corbin Carroll put the Sod Poodles on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run to right field, his third of the year. The Soddies then put runners at the corners with two outs, but they were stranded with the score at 2-1.
Pfaadt continued his strong performance with 1-2-3 innings in the 4th and 5th with a successful pickoff in both frames. Still trailing by one, he was relieved by Justin Lewis in the 6th, ending his night at 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB and 8 K. In his third start, Pfaadt (0-1) took his first loss of the year.
Jorge Ona added to the Missions' lead with a no-doubt solo home run to left field off of Lewis in the 6th. The homer made it 3-1 and was the 22nd home run allowed by the Amarillo pitching staff this season, the most in the minor leagues.
Jorge Barrosa walked and stole his second base of the game in the bottom of the 6th but was stranded in scoring position.
The Missions broke the game open with four runs on in the top of the 8th off of Cam Booser. The leadoff batter walked and was scored on a two-out single from Chris Givin. Korry Howell then doubled to score Givin, and was then scored on a two-run home run by Connor Hollis. After 8, the Sod Poodles trailed 7-1.
Juan Centeno tacked on a run for Amarillo on a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th, his fourth of the year. Both of Amarillo's runs came off of solo shots, and the long bomb cut the deficit to five.
Blake Rogers pitched a clean top of the 9th and the Sod Poodles threatened in the bottom. Jancarlos Cintron singled and Carroll doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and Dominic Fletcher scored them both on a 2-RBI single. Three runs were all the Soddies could muster in the final frame, and fell 7-4.
San Antonio out-hit Amarillo 13-10 and both teams left eight runners on base. The Amarillo pitching staff struck out 16 and walked three, and the Sod Poodles did not commit an error for the sixth time this year.
With the conclusion of this series, the Sod Poodles will hit the road for a series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (KC) for a six-game matchup beginning on Tuesday, April 26 at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, AR. Amarillo will be back at home on May 3 for a six-game series against the Midland RockHounds.
