Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
Amarillo, TEXAS - The Amarillo Sod Poodles (18-21) dropped the series finale to the Tulsa Drillers (24-14) by a final score of 10-3 on Sunday. Tulsa won five of the six games in their visit to Amarillo.
For the fifth time this series, Tulsa scored first, this time in the 1st inning. The leadoff batter singled, stole second base, and was scored on an RBI groundout against Sod Poodles starter Deyni Olivero (0-3).
The Sod Poodles matched them with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Corbin Carroll led it off with a single and was scored three batters later on a two-out RBI single from Ti'Quan Forbes. The run for Carroll extended his active runs-scored streak to 12 games.
Tulsa jumped back ahead with two runs in the 2nd. The first two batters singled, but Olivero bounced back with back-to-back force-outs. He couldn't escape the jam with runners in scoring position, however, as a two-strike, two-out triple drove in both runners.
Up 3-1, the Drillers broke the game open in the middle innings. After a leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch in the 5th, an RBI single gave Tulsa a three-run lead. Olivero gave up a single and a two-run home run in the 6th and the following batter doubled.
Deyni was relieved by Brett de Geus with one on and one out, and an RBI double followed by another two-run home run made it 9-1, Drillers. Olivero's night ended at 5.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, BB, 4 K and he received the loss. de Geus was tagged for two earned runs in 0.2 IP.
Ti Tice took over in the 7th, where the Drillers scored their final run off of back-to-back doubles.
The Sod Poodles had just two hits from the 2nd to 6th innings but threatened with the bases loaded in the 7th. Drew Stankiewicz and Carroll both singled with one out, and Jorge Barrosa joined them with a full-count walk. The threat didn't translate to any runs as a double-play ended the inning.
Blake Rogers and Blake Workman combined for two scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th, and Rogers notched two strikeouts.
Always playing until the 27th out, Amarillo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 9th. The first two batters walked and one scored on an error off a ball put in play by Jorge Barrosa. Forbes added his second RBI on a groundout, but that was all the Soddies could muster in the seven-run loss.
The touchdown deficit tied the largest loss by the Sod Poodles this season. They were out-hit 14-7 by the Drillers and left 11 runners on base. Carroll was the lone Sod Poodle with multiple hits and Forbes led the way with two RBI.
Amarillo will look to right the ship as they depart for a six-game series in Little Rock against the Arkansas Travelers (SEA). Both teams come into the series at 18-21 and in fourth place in their divisions. Amarillo will hand the ball to Brandon Pfaadt to start the series, who is 1-3 with a 4.93 ERA this year.
Notes:
Score-bin Carroll: Leadoff man OF Corbin Carroll singled and scored in the first inning today, extending his current scoring streak to 12 games.
