Scott Snodgress (W, 4-6) held the Suns off balance all afternoon, scattering three hits over seven shutout innings, while walking three batters and striking out two en route to his fourth win of the season.
Jose Urena (L, 6-5) took the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work, while not walking a batter and recording four strikeouts.
Greg Nappo retired all six hitters he faced over his two hitless innings of work, striking out one batter in the process.
James Leverton struck out one batter in a scoreless 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning.
Frankie Reed walked a batter but ended up facing the minimum three batters with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.
The Barons broke through first on Monday, scoring three times in the top of the second inning. Kevan Smith (HR, 6) hit a screaming liner of a solo home run to give Birmingham a 1-0 lead, and the Barons turned that into a 3-0 advantage following Jeremy Farrell's two-run double.
Birmingham added a run in the top of the third when Kevan Smith struck again, this time with a RBI groundout to make it a 4-0 Barons lead.
Back-to-back doubles in the top of the fifth allowed Birmingham to grow their lead to 5-0, as Trayce Thompson came down to score on Rangel Ravelo's RBI double, his second two-bagger of the game.
After being held off the scoreboard through the first eight innings, the Suns were able to stave off the shutout as their bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth. The Suns cut Birmingham's lead to 5-1 when Wilfredo Gimenez came around to score on Isaac Galloway's RBI single. The Suns would be unable to draw any closer as they left the bases loaded to end the ballgame.
The Suns will now travel to Mobile to begin a 10-day road trip, beginning with a five-game series against the BayBears with first pitch of Tuesday's series-opening ballgame set for 7:05 p.m. CT (8:05 p.m. ET). The Suns will send out left-hander Chipper Smith (2-2, 3.62) while the BayBears will likely counter with right-hander Justin Fitzgerald (6-1, 4.17).
Suns fans can listen to Tuesday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:50 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
