
M-Braves Defeat Generals, Take Series

PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings en route to a 7-4 victory over the Jackson Generals Monday evening, claiming the series three-games-to-two. The Braves hit the road for five games before returning to Trustmark Park Sunday, June 29 for a 5:00 PM contest against the Huntsville Stars.
Mississippi (3-2, 42-32) scored seven runs on 10 hits while Jackson (2-3, 33-41) plated four runs on 12 hits. Jose Peraza led the Braves offensive yet again with a 3-for-5 night at the plate. He drove in two runs with a long ball and scored three runs in the game.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first. Julio Morban singled and Patrick Kivlehan walked with two outs. Kevin Rivers then delivered a RBI-single to plate the game's first run.
Mississippi responded in the bottom of the inning. Peraza singled and Mycal Jones doubled to start the inning. Seth Loman followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, tying the game at 1-1. David Rohm then singled to center, driving in Jones to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Barrett Kleinknecht reached on an error. An errant throw by the pitcher allowed Gustavo Nunez to reach safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Braeden Schlehuber then laid down a sacrifice bunt, driving home Kleinknecht. Peraza then blasted a two-run homer to left field, extending the M-Braves lead to 5-1.
Morban doubled and Kivlehan singled to put runners at first and third to start the third. Rivers then delivered a RBI-single to left, cutting the Braves lead to 5-2. Dan Paolini followed with a two-run double to make it a 5-4 game.
The M-Braves added two runs in the seventh. Peraza and Jones reached on back-to-back singles before Cedric Hunter drilled a single to right field to score Peraza. A wild pitch from Kyle Hunter allowed Jones to reach home safely and extend the M-Braves lead to 7-4.
Mitch Atkins (2-0) gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and a walk to pick up the win. He struck out seven batters in six innings of work. Ryne Harper (S, 1) came on and worked the final three frames to pick up the save. He held Jackson to one hit and a walk while striking out three batters. Matt Anderson (2-3) tossed six frames for Jackson, giving up five runs-two earned. He allowed five hits, a homer and one walk while fanning four batters in the loss.
The M-Braves travel to Birmingham for a five-game series against the Barons Tuesday through Saturday. In game one of the series, Braves right-hander Jason Hursh (6-4, 3.48) counters Barons righty Mike Recchia (2-2, 2.73). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
