Jackson Generals News Release
PEARL, MISS. (JUNE 23, 2014) - The Generals (33-41) lost their first series in almost a month when the Mississippi Braves (42-32) bested them 7-4 Monday at Trustmark Park despite out-hitting the M-Braves 12-10. Two key errors by Jackson led to three unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the rubber game of the series. The Generals concluded their season-series at 5-5.
The bats came alive much earlier Monday than they had in the previous games in the series as each team plated runs in the first inning. Jackson picked up the early advantage for the fourth time in the series as Kevin Rivers (2x4, R, 2 RBI) singled to score Julio Morban (2x5, 2 R) for the 1-0 lead.
Mississippi came back and took a lead they would not relinquish in the bottom half of the opening frame via the sacrifice fly once again. This time Seth Loman had the honors as his sac fly scored Jose Peraza to tie the game. The next batter, David Rohm, singled to score Mycal Jones and the Braves were up 2-1.
Jackson then committed two key errors to begin the bottom of the second as the first two Mississippi batters reached. Braeden Schlehuber hit a sacrifice bunt that scored Barrett Kleinknecht to add to the lead. Peraza followed with his first Double-A home run, a two run shot that increased the advantage to 5-1 after just two innings.
The Generals battled back in the third, as Morban doubled with one out and moved to third on a single from Patrick Kivlehan (1x4, R, BB). Rivers followed with an RBI single that scored Morban, and Dan Paolini (2x4, 2 RBI) cleared the bases with a two-run double and the Braves lead was trimmed to just one at 5-4.
The pitchers then caught their breath as the score remained the same until the seventh inning. With one out Mississippi collected three straight singles, the third from Cedric Hunter scored Peraza to make the score 6-4. The Braves added one more run when Jones scored on a wild pitch for the 7-4 advantage.
Matt Anderson (2-3, 5.31) took the tough-luck loss, as he went 6.0 innings for the Generals. He gave up five runs, but only two were earned, on five hits and struck out four Braves. Mitch Atkins (2-0, 3.27) earned the win for Mississippi as he scattered eleven Jackson hits, allowed four runs, struck out seven batters and aided in the Generals in leaving nine men on base. Ryne Harper came out of the bullpen for three innings and earned his first save of the season for the Braves.
Kivlehan walked in the first inning to extend his on-base streak to 29 games, just one shy of the Southern League's best streak this season. His third inning single extended his Southern League leading hitting streak to 17, and Jackson earned two-hit performances from Leon Landry (2x4, BB), Morban, Rivers and Paolini.
The Generals travel home to open a ten-game home stand on Tuesday that begins with the Tennssee Smokies. Tyler Olson (3-3, 4.13) will get the ball for Jackson as the Smokies will look to send Dae-Eun Rheen (3-3, 3.35) to the bump as they make their second trip to West Tennessee this season. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
