Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - Life without Micah Johnson is off to a strong start for the Barons who picked up a 5-4 win and a series victory Tuesday against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 6,368 fans at Regions Field.
Johnson, the 2013 Southern League Finals MVP who was promoted to Class AAA Charlotteprior to the game, was replaced at second base and atop the Barons lineup by Dan Wagner who sparked the offense with a 2-for-4 night.
Pensacola got on the board first with an unearned run in the 3rd inning after a potential double play ball kicked off the glove of shortstop Jamie Pedroza. Rey Navarro followed with a sacrifice fly against starter Scott Snodgress (2-2, 4.54), giving the Blue Wahoos a 1-0 lead.
The Barons took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, starting with a leadoff single by Wagner. He would steal second and move to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Trayce Thompson to tie the game at 1-1. After a Rangel Ravelo double, Christian Marrero put the Barons ahead for good with an RBI single to right field.
Wagner helped build the lead to 3-1 an inning later, driving in a run with an opposite field base hit to left. Rehabbing White Sox INF Jeff Keppinger followed with an opposite field double, scoring Wagner and giving the Barons a 4-1 lead. Thompson capped the inning with an RBI triple increasing the lead to 5-1.
Snodgress held the Blue Wahoos in check for much of the night, allowing the one run on five hits while striking out five over 7.0 innings while picking up his second win of the season.
Pensacola mounted a final rally in the 9th, loading the bases against reliever Parker Frazier with no outs and scoring three runs, shrinking a 5-1 Barons lead to 5-4. However, Barons reliever Nestor Molina would come on to record the final out, preserving the win for the Barons.
With the win, the Barons picked up their third series victory of the year and improved to 16-22 on the season while Pensacola fell to 17-22. The Barons will look to make it four win in five games against the Blue Wahoos tomorrow afternoon as RHP Terry Doyle (3-3, 6.17) takes the hill against RHP Mikey O'Brien (1-2, 4.09). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CDT.
