Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - The Beloit Snappers got five scoreless innings from Dakota Bacus and went on to defeat the Burlington Bees by a score of 5-1 on Monday night in Midwest League action at Community Field.
Combined with Quad Cities' third straight loss, Beloit's seventh win in a row cuts their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to two as they jump to a season-high 14 games over .500 at 39-25. Burlington's fifth straight loss means they now sit at 23-36.
The Bees threatened against Bacus for much of his outing, but never could get a run across against him, as the Snappers' starter stranded men in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings. He helped himself in big way by not walking a batter while allowing seven hits and striking out three. His outing concluded in fitting fashion, escaping a second and third, one out jam with a groundout and a strikeout.
Neither team dented the plate until the fourth when Beloit's Bruce Maxwell singled and John Wooten doubled. Maxwell scored the game's first run two batters later when Matt Olson reached on a fielder's choice. Maxwell touched home again in the sixth, coming all the around from first on a Wooten triple.
Neither team scored in the seventh, but Renato Nunez added to the Snappers lead in the eighth with a two-run double into left. Burlington did get a run across in the bottom of the eighth on a Chevy Clarke RBI single, but Christopher Bostick answered right back for Beloit, crushing his sixth homer of the year over the left field wall to a restore the four-run lead.
Austin House was brought in to relieve Bacus in the sixth and kept the pressure on Burlington. He allowed only one run over the final four innings while striking out three. For his efforts, he was rewarded with his second save.
With a playoff berth within reach, the Snappers come back to Pohlman Field for a six game homestand that begins with three against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The first game is scheduled for 7:00pm on Tuesday and will match Beloit's RHP Raul Alcantara (7-1, 2.65 ERA) against Wisconsin's RHP Damien Magnifico (5-1, 3.67 ERA). Game one of the homestand doubles as a College and Dollar Night. Fans who show a valid college ID are entitled to a general admission ticket for only $1. Hot dogs, small sodas, Pizza Hut pizza slices and small popcorn are all $1 as well. Ott Schweitzer Distributing is sponsoring 12oz drafts of Leinie's products for $1.50.
