Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Minnesota Twins top prospect Byron Buxton put on a show Monday afternoon as he helped lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 6-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Buxton made his first highlight reel play of the day in the top of the third when David Bote drove a ball into the gap in left-center field. On the run, Buxton dove to the warning track and made a backhanded catch while sprawling to the ground to rob Bote.
After the Kernels (39-23) claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an Adam Brett Walker run-scoring double, Buxton extended the advantage in the fifth. For the second straight inning, Pierce Johnson (4-5) walked the leadoff batter while Michael Quesada and Candido Pimentel singled to fill the bases. Buxton came through by driving a double off the wall in left-center, bringing home all three baserunners. Buxton crossed the dish after a single by Jorge Polanco.
Johnson left the contest after 4.2 innings as he was responsible for all five runs scored by the Kernels. Mason Melotakis (6-2) was solid for Cedar Rapids as he limited the Cougars (28-33) to just four hits over seven innings. Best chance to score for the Cougars came in the fourth when Gioskar Amaya walked in front of an Albert Almora double with no outs, but neither man moved out of scoring position.
Lendy Castillo tossed the final 3.1 innings for the Cougars while giving up a tally in the eighth on a Travis Harrison RBI double. Alex Muren recorded the final six outs for the Kernels but coughed up a couple runs. Dan Vogelbach's RBI fielder's choice in the eighth brought home Oliver Zapata. Rock Shoulders doubled and scored in the ninth on a Carlos Escobar groundout.
The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night to begin a three-game set against the Burlington Bees at 6:30. Right-hander Jose Rosario (0-2) will get the start for the Cougars. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
