Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - Jordan John threw eight scoreless innings to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps (30-33) to a 1-0 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (28-34) on Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
John (Win, 5-3) was dominant against the Lugnuts, retiring the first 10 batters he saw before Dalton Pompey beat out an infield single in the fourth, one of just two hits he allowed. The other was a Gustavo Pierre single in the eighth inning, but he stranded Pierre at third.
Known as a groundball pitcher, John got the Lugnuts to hit into 15 groundball outs, compared to just three in the air. In his eight scoreless innings, he also struck out five.
Closer Jose Valdez came on in the ninth inning and allowed a pair of walks to put the game-tying run on second base for Lansing, but he struck out Kevin Patterson to end the game, converting on his 13th save of the season.
The only run of the game came against Lansing starter Javier Avendano in the fifth inning by the Whitecaps. After back-to-back singles by Jason King and Bennett Pickar, a passed ball advanced both runners. Jake Stewart then grounded out to second, scoring King and giving West Michigan the 1-0 lead.
Avendano (Loss, 4-4) pitched seven innings, allowing just the lone unearned run. He struck out four and did not issue a single walk in the tough-luck loss.
The Lugnuts now return home to take on the South Bend Silver Hawks for three games at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Before the regularly scheduled series opener on Tuesday, the Lugnuts and Silver Hawks will first complete a suspended game from April 12th, tied 4-4 in the middle of the 12th inning starting at 6:05 p.m.
If the game is finished before 6:30, the regularly scheduled game will follow at 7:05 p.m. Otherwise, the regular game will start 35 minutes after the suspended game's conclusion. In the starting matchup, Lansing will send Alonzo Gonzalez (2-4, 5.40) against South Bend's Brandon Sinnery (2-3, 2.90).
