Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers tied a franchise record for consecutive victories with a 6-4 win over the Long Beach Armada at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. It is the second time this season the Vipers have won seven straight games and for the third straight game it was a late rally that led to the victory. Down 4-3 into the eighth inning the Snakes tied the game and then went ahead in the ninth inning for the win. The two Calgary natives Travis Drader and Colin Moro were a big part of the team's success going a combined four-for-seven with three runs scored and three batted in. The Vipers are now 8-2 in the second half of the season.
Long Beach scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning when Steve Moss singled, moved to second base on a groundout, stole third, and scored on a Norm Hutchins run batted in base hit.
The Vipers responded in the next half inning as Patrick Arlis reached on a fielding error by second baseman Cleatus Davidson and was followed by a Travis Drader single and Colin Moro RBI base hit. Darryl Brinkley handed his team a 3-1 lead with a two run double to score both Drader and Moro.
Right back came the Armada though in the bottom of the second with a Brett Flowers walk, David Ramirez single, Davidson RBI base knock, and Mike Glomb RBI single to tie the game. Chris Klemm also picked up a base hit to score Davidson and give his team a 4-3 advantage.
Calgary tied the game in the top of the eighth inning with a Jorge Mejia walk, steal of second base, advancement to third on a throwing error by catcher Ramirez, and Mejia scored on a fielding error by shortstop Glomb on a Nelson Castro ground ball.
In the top of the ninth inning the Snakes went back out in front with a Arlis single and Drader RBI double. An insurance run was scored with a Moro RBI single for the 6-4 lead.
Jon Huizinga (3-2) picked up the victory throwing two and a third innings and giving up only one hit while striking out two. Starter Evan Greusel struck out a season high ten batters in tossing six and a third innings.
