Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Jesse Kovacs knocked in five runs and Casey Garrison had four RBI to help Scott Navarro win his first professional game since July, 2003 and the Outlaws snap a club-record eight game losing streak; Chico defeating the Reno Silver Sox 12-5 Friday night in the opener of a four-game series at Nettleton Stadium.
The Outlaws, smarting from losing seven straight during a week-long road trip in Canada, returned home to win their first game since July 12th. It didn't start out well for Chico, though, as Reno drew first blood - Gary Harris led off the game with a home run to right...then in the 2nd a Jose Valdez throwing error paved the way for two unearned run that gave the Silver Sox an early 3-0 lead. The Outlaws bats finally came alive in the bottom of the 2nd - Matt Ceriani singled home Lino Garcia to put Chico on the board...then later in the inning, with two aboard, Kovacs cracked his third home run of the year to put Chico up 4-3. The Outlaws added to their lead in the 4th, and this time it was Garrison who went big fly with two men on base...later in the inning Valdez came home on a Garcia groundout to make the score 8-3.
RBI singles by Kovacs and Garrison in the 5th upped Chico's lead to 10-3...Reno answered back in the 6th when Steve Alexander singled home Juan Senreiso. The score stayed 10-4 until the Outlaws plated single runs in the 7th (Kovacs driving home Eric Pringle with a single to center) and the 8th (Pringle providing an RBI single to drive home Garcia) to make it a 12-4 contest...the Silver Sox scored a run off Chico reliever Rob Ellis in the 9th, but it was much too little and much too late as Ellis got Carlos Madrid to ground out to end it and give the Outlaws the long overdue victory.
The veteran Navarro (1-2) allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work to earn the victory, while Daniel Chaffardet (0-1) gave up eight runs and nine hits in his Reno debut to take the loss. The Outlaws piled up 16 hits on the night, with Pringle going 4-for-5 and Kovacs and Ceriani collecting three safeties apiece...the Silver Sox had 12 hits in the losing effort, with All-Star catcher D.J. Dixon finishing 3-for-4 with Harris, Senreiso and Alexander each chipping in with two hits. Friday's win improved Chico's second half record to1-7 and 16-34 overall...Reno dropped to 3-3 in second half play and 21-29 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, with Nick Casanova (0-2) scheduled to start for the Outlaws. First pitch is 7:05p... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
