Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. (MAY 11, 2014) - The Generals lost 17-13 to the Tennessee Smokies on Sunday night. The 30 runs combined was a franchise record and just five shy of the Southern League all-time record. The number of combined runs is, however, a Southern League record for a game that saw no home runs. Ketel Marte (4x6, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB, 2B) shined going 4-for-6 on the night and scoring two runs, but ultimately it was not enough as the Generals lost their ninth game in their last 11. The game was 3 hours, 55 minutes which was the longest nine-inning game thus far this season in the Southern League.

The first three men in the order during the bottom of the first loaded the bases for Patrick Kivlehan (0x4, RBI, BB), who came into the game second in all of minor league baseball in RBIs. Kivlehan hit a sac fly, notching his first Double-A RBI.

Manny Pina (1x2, 3 R, RBI, 3 BB, 2B) picked up his third RBI in the past two games on a double that increased the lead to 4-0. Then Patrick Brady (1x4, 3 RBI, BB, 3B) stayed red hot as he tripled home Pina and Mickey Wiswall (2x5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B) to make the score 6-0 after the bottom of the first.

Tennessee would not be phased as they came back in the top of the second as Rubi Silva tripled to left-center and it scored Jorge Soler and Charlie Cutler. Jeudy Valdez followed with a groundout that scored Silva and the lead was cut in half 6-3.

In the third Wiswall doubled to score Kevin Rivers (1x4, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) and Pina. Wiswall scored on a single from John Hicks (2x5, R, RBI) who extended his on-base streak to 14 games. The Generals led after three innings 9-4.

The Smokies bats came alive in the fourth inning. Tennessee sent 13 men to the plate, scored eight runs, picked up five hits, induced four walks and went from behind by five to ahead by three, 12-9.

Jackson got two of those runs back in the fifth. With two on and two out Dan Paolini (1x3, R, 2 RBI, BB) singled home Marte and Jamal Austin (1x5, 2 R, BB, SB) to cut the Smokies lead to 12-11.

Tennessee got another run in the seventh when Cutler hit a slow rolling single to third with the bases loaded. Kris Bryant scored to make it 13-11. The Smokies increased their lead again with four more runs in the eighth to make the score 17-11.

The Generals got two runs back in the bottom half of the eighth, but got no closer. Marte led the way with four hits, Brady added three more, and Wiswall and Paolini each had two hits. But it was not enough as Jackson fell 17-13.

Every Smokies starter except for Anthony Giansanti scored two runs. Every Jackson batter recorded an RBI except for Jamal Austin and each Jackson batter recorded a hit excluding Patrick Kivlehan.

In the first two games in the series the Smokies have scored 27 runs on 34 hits while the Generals have scored 19 runs on 23 hits.

The Generals and Smokies will match up again Monday at The Ballpark in Jackson. Victor Sanchez (0-0, 5.40) will get the start for Jackson. He will be opposed by Dae-Eun Rhee (2-1, 3.25) for Tennessee. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
