Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped game five of their five-game series to the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 9-1 in front of 3,544 fans at Regions Field.

The Smokies wasted no time jumping on Barons starter Terry Doyle (2-2, 6.00) scoring eight runs on five hits including a pair of two-run doubles by Dustin Geiger and Wes Darvill to take an 8-0 lead. Doyle retired only 2 of the 14 batters he faced in the first inning before being lifted in favor of reliever Jarrett Casey. However, a key error by third baseman Jeremy Farrell on a potential double play ball made two of the runs in the inning unearned.

The Barons were held hitless through the first 6.0 innings of the game as Smokies starter Corey Black (1-1, 2.65) surrendered just three walks and struck out eight over 6.0 scoreless IP. The first Barons hit would finally come in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Josh Richmond.

The Barons lone run came in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Gordon Beckham, scoring Jeremy Farrell from third base but it wasn't enough as the Barons fell by a final score of 9-1.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 10-10 while the Smokies improved to 10-10. TheBarons head on the road Thursday to begin a five-game series against the Lookouts in Chattanooga. The Barons will send RHP Nick McCully (2-0, 1.26) to the mound in game one against RHP Carlos Frias (2-1, 2.77). First pitch is scheduled for a 6:15 PM CDT.
