Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (3-10) dropped their third-straight game to the Tennessee Smokies (6-6) on Wednesday night, losing their third-consecutive series of the year. The 3-10 start to the 2018 season matches the worst 13-game start since the Biscuits' inaugural season in 2004.
J.D. Martin (0-3) was making his third start of the year, and the knuckleballer worked around some early traffic for the first two innings. In the top of the third, however, Martin would let up a lead-off single to Trey Martin and then walked third basemen Jason Vosler. Later in the inning Eddy Martinez would double on a line drive to center field scoring Vosler and Martin, giving Tennesse a 2-0 lead. Smokies second baseman Trent Giambrone would keep the inning going smacking a double into left center field scoring Ian Rice, making it 3-0 Smokies.
Martin would end up going five innings, surrendering five hits, three earned runs, and walking five batters.
The Biscuits would pull a couple of runs back in the bottom of the third against Smokies starter Thomas Hatch (1-0) as Nathan Lukes brought Mac James home on a sac fly and Nick Solak smacked a single down the third base line to score Thomas Milone, bringing Montgomery to within one at 3-2.
That would be all the Biscuits could muster against Tennessee pitching as the Smokies held them scoreless the rest of the way. Biscuits batters would end the night going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position along with leaving 11 men on base for the third time this season.
The Smokies would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Volser RBI-groundout to put the game out of reach.
Biscuits lefty Travis Ott was impressive in relief, at one point striking out five straight batters. Ott would go three innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
The Biscuits will try to snap their losing skid on Thursday night in game four when Eduar Lopez (1-1) clashes with Oscar De La Cruz (0-2) at 6:35 PM
