New Jersey Jackals News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - Sean Smith collected five of New Jersey's 11 hits as the Jackals halted a three-game skid, doubling up the Pittsfield Colonials, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Wahconah Park. The New Jersey victory snaps Pittsfield's six-game winning streak.
The Jackals staked starter A.J. Wideman to a 2-0 lead before the southpaw took the mound and New Jersey never trailed after that point. In the top of the first, Smith led off with a double and scored on a Myron Leslie single to open the scoring. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Jones gave New Jersey a 2-0 lead.
The Colonials cut their deficit to 2-1 on a Danny Bomback sacrifice fly in the third, but the Jackals countered with a run in the top of the fifth and three more in the sixth, using a Smith RBI single, a Mike DeJesus sacrifice fly, and a D'Angelo Jimenez run-scoring double to take a 6-1 lead.
Pittsfield plated a run in the sixth when Billy Mottram doubled and Angel Molina singled him home to make it 6-2, but the Jackals struck back yet again in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 7-2 on a Nick Santomauro RBI infield single.
The Colonials rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Bomback before New Jersey capped the scoring with a run in the eighth.
Wideman (3-2) notched the victory, allowing four runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 frames. Pittsfield starter Miguel Flores (2-8) was tagged for the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Jackals' southpaws Jared Locke and Jeff Gogal combined to finish out the game with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Smith finished the day 5-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Jackals and Colonials wrap up their four-game series on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (10-2, 2.30 ERA), who leads the Can-Am League in wins, ERA, and strikeouts, to the mound against Pittsfield right-hander Chad Paronto (6-5, 4.34 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
