
Smith Fans 12 in Wingnuts Victory

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (42-20) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs (34-28) 4-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In a matchup of two former Major League teammates, Wingnuts' starter Chris Smith bested Mike Burns. Smith struck out a season-high 12 batters and allowed one earned run in six and two-thirds innings. Smith walked one and allowed just three base hits.
Wichita jumped on Burns early with four consecutive singles to open the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Khoury reached on an infield single to shorstop and took second base on a throwing error by Yasel Gomez. Khoury scored on Jake Kahaulelio's line drive single to left. Kahaulelio stole second and went to third on John Rodriguez's groundball single through the left side. C.J. Ziegler followed with an RBI single to left that scored Kahaulelio with the Wingnuts' second run.
Gomez hit a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth to account for Lincoln's only run of the game.
Wichita responded in the bottom of the fifth when Madison Beaird doubled off the right-center field wall for his first professional hit. Beaird took third on Jared McDonald's bunt single and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly to left from Kahaulelio.
Beaird tripled down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh. McDonald made it 4-1 Wichita with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Smith struck out multiple batters in six different innings, and struck out the side in the top of the fourth.
Burns took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Burns struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Andrew Aizenstadt, Lincoln Holdzkom, and Josh Dew combined for two and one-third scoreless relief innings. Dew struck out two in the top of the ninth and earned his 14th save of the year.
The Wingnuts open a three-game series against the Amarillo Sox on Monday night. First pitch at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is 7:05 p.m. Ryan Scoles starts for Wichita. Individual tickets can be purchased by calling (316) 755-SEAT, or by visiting www.selectaseat.com
