Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox are unable to even the series against the T-Bones as they lose 6-5 in ten innings at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The Sox had almost twice as many hits as Kansas City but fell for the third time in the series. The attendance at the ballpark was 6,154 with a game time of three hours and fourteen minutes.

The leadoff hitter singled to get on for Kansas City in the first but was caught stealing by Sox catcher, Trey Ford. Starter Ryan Mitchell got out of the inning with three batters faced. Offensively, Amarillo was put out in order in the first and did not score until the sixth inning. Kansas City scored in the second inning with a pair of doubles from Jairo Perez and Felix Molina to make it 1-0.

Mitchell started the fourth with a solo homer given up to Matt Padgett and then two batters later another homerun to Perez, making it 3-0. The T-Bones would not score again until the tenth. The Sox came close to scoring in the second and third innings but groundouts ended both chances. Kansas City's second double play was turned on the Sox to end the fifth just as the second inning ended. To lead off the sixth, KC Serna doubled and scored two batters later on a Joe Weik groundout to third. The score was 3-1 after six innings played.

The T-Bones' starter, Lucas Irvine put the Sox down in order during seventh as did Mitchell on the T-Bones the same inning. Amarillo had a chance to come within a run in the eighth but Serna, who doubled again, was left stranded. In the ninth, John Holdzkom relieved Mitchell and recorded a groundout but was pulled after walking the next two batters. Jeff Lyman came in and got the Sox' second double play of the night which ended the inning.

Jorge Delgado got on base in the bottom of the ninth after a sharp line drive bounced off the glove of T-Bone second basemen, Felix Molina. Molina proceeded to pick up the ball and throw it into his own dugout, allowing Delgado to advance to second. A passed ball moved Delgado to third and then Cory Patton singled for his third time of the game to make the score 3-2. Chris Grossman pinch-hit for Trey Ford and struck out for the second out. Adam DeLaGarza came up and drove in Jermel Lomack, who pinch-ran for Patton at first. Lomack also stole third base before scoring the tying run. Lucan Irvine got Jason Martin to ground to second to get out of the inning.

Jeff Lyman started the tenth for the Sox and allowed a single and was yanked after a sacrifice bunt moved the runner over. Josh Giles came in and gave up an RBI-double to Devin Goodwin, who later scored on an error by DeLaGarza at second. Matt Padgett was intentionally walked after Goodwin and Padgett ended up scoring on a passed ball to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the inning, Serna tripled to left center and scored when Chris Valencia doubled him in. Jorge Delgado also doubled to bring the Sox within a run. Freddy Flores came in to run for Delgado at second, reached third, but would not score the tying run. Brandon Jones was the last batter of the game as he grounded out to third on a 3-0 pitch from Sean Toler. The first baseman, Kyle Nichols had to apply the tag on Jones to end it.

Sean Toler (W, 2-2) went two-thirds of the tenth inning and allowed no runs and no hits. Josh Giles (L, 1-4) also went two-thirds and gave up two runs, none earned on a hit with one walk. There was no save in the game as Toler was the last pitcher on the mound when the T-Bones had the lead. Amarillo hits fifteen times while Kansas City hits eight and commits two errors while the Sox commit one.

With the loss, the Sox fall to 32-26, while the T-Bones improve to 25-37 on the season. Monday, the Sox travel to Wichita for the beginning of a six-game road trip against the Wingnuts and then to Laredo.
