Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass -- Rox starter Mike Smith (9-3) dealt seven innings of nine-hit ball, surrendering just two runs, to earn his league-leading ninth victory of the season as Brockton knocked off the Pittsfield Colonials, 5-3, on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium in front of 3,736 fans.

Smith's ERA has now dropped to 2.99, which is good for third in the Can-Am League. The righty also fanned a total of seven on the night and is now tied for the lead in that category with 78.

The Colonials (11-7 second half, 31-34 overall) got on top first with DH Angel Molina's RBI single in the first inning, taking advantage of a hit batsmen and a walk with two-outs in the first.

Brockton's bats came back in the second, scoring four runs in the inning. The Rox (8-9, 35-29) as a team were a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the inning, as 1B Melvin Falu and 3B Phillip Cuadrado had singles, SS Dominic Ramos an RBI double, and CF Chris Valencia an two-run triple. Valencia is now third in the league with four triples on the year.

Pittsfield scored a run back in the third inning on a two-out double by 3B Jason Taylor, but The Rox re-assumed a three-run lead on C Chris Grossman's home run to lead off the fourth inning, 5-2.

Grossman went 2-for-3 with the homer, a double and two runs scored. 2B Shawn Williams and Falu also had multi-hit games for the Rox. Reliever Colin Lynch hurled a perfect eighth setting up closer Hunter Davis for his ninth save of the season in the ninth inning.

LHP David Qualben (4-6) was handed the loss, surrendering five earned runs on 11 hits over seven innings. Molina finished 3-for-5 in the game with two RBI, while RF Daniel Carte, Taylor and LF Rafael Cabreja chipped in with multi-hit games in the loss for Pittsfield.

The Rox will look to make it two in a row tomorrow against the Colonials as LHP Mike Wlodarczyk (7-3) takes the hill against RHP Kyle Zaleski (7-2). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
