York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution lost their series opener to the Somerset Patriots 6-2 in front of 3,988 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Monday evening. The loss, coupled with Lancaster's win over Camden, allows the Barnstormers to clinch the Freedom Division's first half title and a playoff berth, eliminating the Revs from the first half race. York still owns the third best overall record in the league, as the final week of the first half schedule continues on Tuesday when the Revs host the Patriots again at 6:30 p.m.
It was a tough night for the York offense, as Patriots starter Justin Cassel (2-5) took a two-hit shutout into the sixth, allowing just one run in his six innings of work to earn his second win. Andres Perez drove in the only two runs for the Revs on a sixth inning fielder's choice, and an eighth inning double.
Somerset scored the game's first run in the third when Dan DeGeorge lined an 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a triple, and scored on a throwing error when catcher Travis Scott attempted a pickoff throw. The Patriots scored again in the fifth when Lou Santangelo reached on an infield hit, advanced on a walk to DeGeorge, and scored on a seeing-eye single up the middle by Joe Holden.
After the Revs scored on Perez' fielder's choice in the sixth pulling within 2-1, Somerset answered with two in the seventh and two in the eighth to effectively ice it. DeGeorge was again front and center as the eighth place hitter lined a double down the left field line leading off the seventh. Holden then reached on a bunt single landing runners at the corners, setting the stage for a squeeze bunt by Dan Hennigan, who picked up an RBI and reached safely when Revs pitcher Chris Cody's flip to first hit Hennigan in the back resulting in an error. Jonny Tucker followed with a third consecutive bunt on which the Revs finally recorded an out. The sacrifice set the stage for another run to score, however, as Freddie Bynum followed with an RBI single through a drawn-in infield.
Yunesky Sanchez ripped an RBI triple and pinch-hitter Adam Donachie lined a sacrifice fly to center for the Patriots' final runs in the eighth.
Cody (4-8) suffered the loss for York despite working into the eighth, charged with all six runs.
DeGeorge reached base all four times, recording a triple, double, a pair of walks, and two runs scored, leading the Patriot offense.
Notes: Perez (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games. Scott (0-for-4) lost an 11-game streak, which had been the Revs' longest active hitting streak, and tied the club's second longest of the season. The Revs have lost three straight, but are still 25-15 since May 24. Chris Nowak went 0-for-3, but stole a base and reached on a walk in his return from the Mexican League, extending his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the league. York's Matt Chico (0-1, 6.40) will face Somerset's Roy Merritt (5-1, 3.02) in Tuesday's contest, which features a John Kuhn Bobblehead Giveaway, presented by Turkey Hill to the first 1,500 fans. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
