BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut - Bobby Livingston worked seven solid innings picking up his Atlantic League leading eighth win of the season and catcher Octavio Martinez collected four hits and a couple RBIs to help end the Sugar Land Skeeters four-game losing streak with an 8-4 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish Monday night at Harbor Yard.
Coming up tomorrow, the Skeeters (27-37) and Bluefish (27-37) faceoff in game two of the three-game series with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m. CDT. Heath Phillips (1-4) makes his ninth start of the season against Dan Serafini (1-0). When Sugar Land returns home for four games before the All-Star Break, prepare for Pops in the Park! Constellation Field will host an All-American experience with patriotic fireworks and the Fort Bend Symphony after the game on July 5. Livingston (8-2) has been a sure bet for the Skeeters when working at least six innings in his last six outings. The lefty has picked up a win in six straight outings and seven of his last eight. Last time Livingston had a loss was against the Bluefish on May 19, but tonight he turned it around. He worked seven solid innings giving up just four earned runs on one walk and eight scattered hits while striking out six.
The same could not be said for Bluefish starter Chris Hayes (0-1). Making his first start of the season in only his third appearance, Hayes gave up five runs, three earned, off three walks and six hits while only striking out one batter. His defense did not help contributing to the defeat with five errors throughout the night.
The Skeeters scored first in the game in the first when former Bluefish outfielder and current Skeeter right fielder Steve Moss walked with two outs. One batter later, Jason Lane doubled him in from first to give Sugar Land the lead, 1-0.
In the second, the Skeeters scored one more after Matt Hagen walked to leadoff. He was pushed to second on a catcher's interference call during Bubba Bell's at-bat and brought home when Octavio Martinez singled into right to double the lead, 2-0.
Sugar Land continued the trend adding one more run in the third. Lane singled to start and reached second on an overthrown ball from shortstop Eddie Rodgers. He was then moved to third when Josh Pressley reached on an error on a grounder to first. Hagen drove Lane in from third with a sac-fly into right, 3-0.
In the fourth, the Skeeters ended their pattern of scoring one run in an inning by tallying two in the fourth. Martinez and Iggy Suarez reach with back-to-back singles. The third from Miguel Negron scored Martinez from second to push the lead up to four, 4-0, and during the next at-bat with Suarez now on third, relieve pitcher Matt Pike balked in the fifth run, 5-0.
Bridgeport finally scored their first run in the bottom half of the fourth after Rodgers reached with a leadoff double. After being moved to third from a single by Prentice Redman, he scored on a double-play groundout from Luis Lopez, 5-1.
The Skeeters got the run back in the fifth, though. With two outs in the inning, Bell reached on another error from Rodgers and wound up coming home on another error from the third baseman Lopez, 6-1.
Livingston's only rough inning was the seventh when he allowed three runs to score with two outs in the inning. Lopez reached to start the inning with a single, but after a fly-out and strikeout, Livingston faltered briefly. James Simmons tripled in the second run for the Bluefish with an RBI-triple into right, Angel Flores scored him on an RBI-single up the middle, and Elliot Ayala brought home the fourth run with an RBI-single to cap the scoring at 6-4.
Sugar Land buttoned up after the seventh though using Sean Morgan and Gary Majewski to retire the eighth and ninth innings respectively in order to finish the game. The Skeeters scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth just to be sure the score stayed true with an 8-4 final.
Skeeters Bites: Octavio Martinez collected four hits in a game for the second time this season...Jason Lane hit two doubles in the game...Bubba Bell hit his 20th double of the season...Bobby Livingston picked up his Atlantic League leading 8th win of the season.
