Slow Start Dooms Mavericks against Fuel
April 3, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - A slow start proved costly as the Kansas City Mavericks (34-31-3-2) closed out their regular season home schedule with a 4-1 loss to Central Division foe Indy (35-29-4-1) Tuesday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
The loss puts the Mavericks in sixth in the Central standings as the Fuel jumped to fourth, surpassing the Kalamazoo Wings by one point. As the records currently stand, the Mavericks are two points out of a playoff spot with two games remaining, but both teams they trail have a game in hand.
Indy raced out of the gate, lighting the lamp just 39 seconds into the contest as Logan Nelson continued to burn the Mavericks with his third goal in the last three-plus periods of hockey against the Mavericks. His effort was followed later in the period by Josh Shalla's strike to double the advantage to 2-0 into the first intermission.
Nelson found twine once more to start the scoring in the second, further building on the lead to make it 3-0 for the visiting team near the game's halfway point. Corey Durocher provided the Mavs with a lift four minutes later, his 10th score of the season to put the Mavs on the board.
Both teams went scoreless in the final frame until late in the third when the Fuel capitalized on a Ryan Rupert short-handed, empty net goal with just over two minutes remaining.
The Mavericks close out the regular season with a pair of games at Utah, Friday and Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CT.
