Slow Start Deters Mavs

August 26, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The last time the Mavs were able to set up a potential sweep in a series came at Inland Empire in early July. With a chance to take two of the first three games over the 66ers, the Mavs stumbled again, falling 6-4 Wednesday in San Bernardino.

Things didn't go well right away in the first. With none on and two out, Julio Morban dropped a fly ball in left field to keep the inning alive.

After a wild pitch and a walk, Andres Perez was ruled safe at first on a controversial play for an infield single that brought home a run to make it 1-0.

The Mavs were able to take the lead with three runs in the third. Kyle Seager hit an RBI triple, and Edilio Colina followed with an RBI groundout to put the Mavs in front.

With two outs, Jake Shaffer and Ji-Man Choi hit back-to-back doubles to give the Mavs a 3-1 lead. However, Choi's double was the only hit with a runner in scoring position, as the Mavs went just 1- for-11.

Inland Empire responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Making his Maverick debut, Nate Reed really struggled with his control in the frame, walking three and throwing two wild pitches.

The 66ers loaded the bases with none out, but Reed got Pedro Baez to hit into a big double play, even though a run scored.

Steven Caseres tied the game with an RBI single that popped in and out of the glove of Choi at first base. A wild pitch plated the go- ahead run.

The Mavs had chances to tie the in fifth and sixth, but let them go for naught. Inland Empire made them pay with two runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Johan Garcia collected an RBI double, and Alfredo Silverio added an RBI single.

Ralph Henriquez connected on an RBI double with none out in the eighth, but the Mavs couldn't find a way to bring him home and remained down by two.

Edilio Colina singled with one out in the ninth, but Eric Krebs struck out Johermyn Chavez and Shaffer to end the game and earn his fourth save.

66ers starting pitcher Bobby Blevins wasn't overpowering, but gave Inland Empire a quality start. Blevins (2-7) allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings. He struck out and walked three each.

Due to his laborious third inning, Reed (0-1) only lasted four innings. Outside of the third he pitched well, but ended up with the loss. He allowed four runs--three earned--and three hits with three strikeouts. It was the four walks and four wild pitches that did him and the Mavericks in.

The Mavs will look to take two of three from the 66ers in their final meeting of 2010 Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
