Quakes' Offense Struggles as Win Streak Ends

August 26, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Bakersfield, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes saw their four-game road winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, struggling through a 7-1 loss to the Bakersfield Blaze.

Blaze first baseman Chris McGuiness hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs, while the Quakes suffered one of their worst offensive games of the year.

The Rancho bats had just one hit through the first eight innings of play and broke up the shutout two outs into the ninth inning.

Quakes' starter Manny Flores (5-9) took the tough-luck loss, as he surrendered three runs, just two earned, over six innings of work. McGuiness took Flores deep in the third, a two-run shot to give the Blaze a 2-0 lead. Flores allowed an unearned run in the fourth, as Bakersfield upped their lead to 3-0.

Manaurys Correa struggled in the seventh, as the Blaze broke it open. McGuiness struck for a three-run blast to make it a 6-0 game. Three batters later, Mike Bianucci took Correa deep, giving the Blaze a 7-0 lead.

Blaze starter Joe Wieland (4-3) was incredible, allowing a one-out infield single to Darwin Perez in the first inning, then holding the Quakes without another hit through the seventh inning.

After Trevor Hurley worked a hitless eighth, Blaze reliever Hector Nelo allowed back-to-back hits to Perez and Gabe Jacobo to open the ninth. The Quakes finally broke up the shutout when Eric Oliver's sac fly plated Perez from third, putting the Quakes on the board at 7-1. Nelo wouldn't allow any additional damage though, getting Richard Cates to ground into a fielder's choice for the final out of the game.

The Quakes (30-28, 69-59) remain tied for first place, as both Lake Elsinore and High Desert both lost on Wednesday night. The Quakes look for a 5-1 road trip, sending Garrett Richards (2-1) to the mound on Thursday, as he'll match up against Bakersfield lefty Robbie Ross (4-2). First pitch in the series-finale will be 7:15pm.

The Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening the final home stand of the regular season on Friday, August 27th. Friday night is First Responder's Night, as well as another $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy $1 Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola Products and $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches, thanks to KFROG 95.1. First Responder's Night includes the Quakes honoring the Inland Empire's Fire Fighters, Law Enforcement and First Response Teams.
