San Jose Giants News Release
Visalia's Pat McAnaney struck out seven over seven scoreless innings and the Rawhide overcame a late San Jose Giants rally to post a 3-2 victory on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Ehire Adrianza connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, however San Jose stranded the potential tying run on base en route to dropping the finale of the series. The Giants now own a 70-59 overall record with 11 games remaining in the regular season.
McAnaney (3-0) stayed perfect in three starts with Visalia this season after limiting San Jose to five hits and issuing just one walk during his stint on the mound. Rawhide designated hitter Josh Ford finished 4-for-4 to lead the offensive attack, including a key two-run double in the top of the sixth inning.
Trailing 3-0, Drew Biery began the bottom of the ninth by drawing a five-pitch walk from Rawhide reliever Justin Mace. Adrianza was up next and he crushed a 3-2 delivery over the fence in right center field for his second home run of the homestand and third of the season.
Victor Capellan was then summoned out of the Visalia bullpen, but he promptly walked pinch-hitter Wendell Fairley to bring the potential winning run to the plate. However, Capellan induced pinch-hitter Johnny Monell to line out to left before striking out Francisco Peguero on three pitches and then recording a strikeout of Juan Perez in a 10-pitch battle to end the game. Capellan was credited with his second save of the year.
Justin Fitzgerald (9-6) suffered the loss for the Giants after yielding three runs (all earned) on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out four.
Fitzgerald began his afternoon by setting down nine out of the first 10 Rawhide hitters over three scoreless innings. Alfredo Marte then led off the top of the fourth with a single before stealing second base and then advancing to third when catcher Matt Klimas' throw sailed into center field for an error. Marc Krauss followed with a sacrifice fly to center giving Visalia a 1-0 lead.
The Rawhide then struck for two runs in the top of the sixth to knock Fitzgerald out of the game. Krauss started the frame with a single while Paul Goldschmidt followed with a double off the fence in center to put runners on second and third. After Matt Davidson drew a walk to load the bases, Ford lined a double into the right field corner plating two for a 3-0 advantage. Davidson was thrown out at the plate attempting to score a third run on the play. After Ford's hit, Fitzgerald was removed from the game in favor of Ryan Verdugo.
Verdugo (1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO), Eric Stolp (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Giants within striking distance.
San Jose threatened in the bottom of the third inning as consecutive two-out singles from Klimas and Peguero followed by a walk to Perez loaded the bases. However, McAnaney retired Jose Flores on a routine groundout to second base ending the inning.
McAnaney had retired six in a row until Flores tripled into the left field corner with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Michael Sandoval struck out and Charlie Culberson flied out to right stranding the runner in scoring position. Then in the seventh, Biery led off with a double, but McAnaney quickly set down the next three hitters preserving the shutout.
Mace entered the game to begin the bottom of the eighth and worked around a one-out single off the bat of Perez and a two-out single from Sandoval to keep Visalia in front by a 3-0 margin. San Jose left nine runners on base in the game. They were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
