Giants Bats Silenced in 3-0 Loss to Visalia

August 26, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Visalia starting pitcher Charles Brewer and a pair of relievers combined on a six-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Brewer earned the win after tossing the first six innings while the Giants didn't manage a hit in the contest after the bottom of the third. The loss snaps San Jose's three-game win streak and drops their record to 70-58.

Jose Flores (2-for-4) was the only Giants player to finish with a multi-hit game. San Jose left seven runners on base in the first four innings against Brewer while the Rawhide pitching staff combined to set down the last 11 Giants hitters that came to the plate.

San Jose starter Andrew Romo (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just one hit and one run over four innings of work. Romo walked six and struck out two during his stint on the mound.

Visalia scored a single run in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Consecutive walks to Josh Ford and Kyle Greene began the frame before a sacrifice bunt from Alberto Diaz. Gerson Montilla followed with a fly ball to left center field that was caught by a diving Wendell Fairley, however Ford tagged from third base and scored the first run of the contest.

The Giants threatened in the second and third innings against Brewer, but failed to score in each frame. In the bottom of the second, Fairley singled with one out before Joel Weeks singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. However, Brewer retired the next hitter, James Simmons, on a routine groundout to third.

In the bottom of the third, Francisco Peguero led off with a single while Flores then singled with one out. After Drew Biery's two-out infield single though loaded the bases, Brewer retired Fairley on a line out to center field.

San Jose would then not pick-up a hit for the remainder of the game as Brewer pitched around a two-out hit by pitch in the fourth and a one- out error in the sixth to complete his outing.

The Rawhide added to their lead in the top of the seventh against reliever Ben Wilshire as Montilla led off with a single, advanced to second on Niko Gallego's sacrifice bunt and came home when Alfredo Marte grounded a double into the left field corner. Marc Krauss followed with a single into right plating Marte for a 3-0 advantage.

Christian Beltre set down all six batters that he faced over the seventh and eighth innings before Yonata Ortega worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to earn his seventh save since joining Visalia.

Marte (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), who had the only extra-base hit of the game, led an eight-hit Rawhide offensive attack.
