
Sloppy defense costs Renegades game

FISHKILL, NY (July 7, 2004) -The Hudson Valley Renegades (11-9) were defeated by the Staten Island Yankees (5-14) 6-3 at Dutchess Stadium in front of a sell out crowd of 4, 778. The game's first pitch was at 12:11 and is the only Renegade matinee of the season.
The Renegades lead 2-1 heading into the eighth inning until Yankees 2B Justin Christian drove in the tying run. Two batters later OF Scott Rich drove in Christian and the Yankees had a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eight, the Renegades struck back. 2B Chad Cooper singled and scored later on a Yankee error, tying the game at 3-3.
With the game tied in the ninth, Yankees C Peter Pilittere singled to lead off the inning. The Renegades then made three consecutive errors, leading to three unearned runs scoring, giving the Yankees a 6-3 lead and the game.
Matt Cobb (ND, 0-3) started the game for the Renegades pitching six innings surrendering six hits and only one run. Aaron Walker (L, 1-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing two hits, two runs but none were earned in the loss.
Jason Jones (W, 1-2) got the win for the Yankees. He pitched eight innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Brad Blackwell (S, 1) got the save, pitching one inning, walking one and striking out two.
Renegades C John Jaso, the New York-Penn League's leading hitter, was 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored. Yankees 3B Marcos Vechionacci was 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored and a RBI.
The Renegades have their first off day of the season tomorrow and resume play Friday against the New Jersey Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:11 PM.
