New Jersey Cardinals News Release

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the Cardinals (10-10) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (14-6), 4-0. Jason John (1-1) pitched 6 scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Cards, and Casey Brown (0-1) was the loser for the ValleyCats (Houston Astros).

The Cards pitching staff dominated the ValleyCats offense all night long, allowing just 2 hits. John gave up only 2 hits, no walks and struck out 6 in his 6 innings of work before handing it over to the bullpen. Jaymes Torres pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th and Jackson Paz worked a perfect 9th to close out the victory.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 6th when the Cards used a 2-out rally to take the lead. Steve Sherman doubled to left and scored one batter later on a Brady Toops double. Toops scored two batters later when Sean Dobson singled to left. The Cards added an insurance run in the 7th on Casey Grimms RBI single and another in the 8th on Dobsons single to center.

3B Jake Mullinax extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 1-for-3 night, but 2B Chris Patrick failed to record a hit and his streak ended at 9 games. Matt Shepherd was 1-for-2 to extend his streak to 7 games.

The Cardinals are back in action Friday night when they travel to Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) to open a three game set. The club returns home to Skylands Park on Saturday night at 5:00 pm for Scout Sleepover Night, a mousepad giveaway sponsored by SECTV and post-game Family Catch on the Field.
