Niles, OH- Brett Parker singled home Mike Butia to break a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Mahoning Valley Scrappers a 5-4 victory over Vermont in a New York-Penn League game Wednesday night that saw the Expos hurt themselves bu having five runners thrown out on the bases.

Vermont had a 1-0 lead after three innings, but had a runner eliminated on the bases in each inning. Doug Vroman was caught off second base on a groundout in the first, Ja'Mar Clanton thrown out at third on a base hit and Vroman caught trying to steal third base.

The Scrappers tied the game 1-1 in the fourth, but Vermont retook the lead in the fifth on a leadoff home run from Steve Mortimer. The Expos next two batters reached on single, but with one out Jose Contreras was picked off first base by catcher Omar Casillas.

Mahoning Valley then got two runs, one unearned, in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead before Vermont scored two runs in the sixth to take their third lead of the game. Mortimer, who was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for the night, hit a groundrule double down the leftfield line to score Luke Montz and Devin Ivany to give the Expos a 4-3 lead.

Doubles from Mike Butia and Teodoro Encarnacion in the bottom of the sixth off Vermont starting pitcher Jim Henderson tied the game 4-4. Then in the eighth, Edgardo Baez reached on a one-out walk before being picked off first by eventual winning pitcher Paul Lubrano (1-0) for the Expos five runner knocked down on the bases in the game.

Butia, who was 0-for his first-11 in the series, started the eighth inning off reliever David Trahan (0-1)with his second straight double. After a strikeout and intentional walk, Parker blooped a single to right to Butia with the winning run.

The Expos, who had comeback from a 2-1 deficit in the ninth inning Tuesday, went quietly in the ninth on Wednesday with a groundout, strikeout and groundout to give Mark Harris his second save of the series.

Contreras was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Montz and Ivany both had a hit and run scored for Vermont. Henderson allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits over six innings as the Expos finished their seven-game roadtrip with a loss, but went 4-3 overall on the roadtrip.

Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Butia was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Mahoning Valley (8-12), while Casillas and Marshall Szabo both had two hits and a run scored for the Scrappers.

Vermont (9-11) take Thursday off before beginning a three-game homestand with the Oneonta Tigers on Friday night at Centennial Field. The Expos and Tigers will play Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m., then wrap up the series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m.
