Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âFans who bring a pair of athletic socks to the Xplorers June 5 game will get $2 off any seat, and will aid Memphis' Union Mission in serving homeless and hurting men and women.
"Socks are one of those things we distribute a lot of at the mission," mission Director of Development Steve Carpenter said. "Once a homeless person really dirties up a pair, they throw them away. So we go through a lot of socks."
Carpenter also said the mission needs summer clothing, such as T-shirts and shorts. The mission will be the featured non-profit at the June 5 game against the Bossier City Battlewings and will have a booth on the concourse where fans can bring donations.
June 5 will also be "Faith and Family Night," featuring entertainment from Christian band "Brother's Keeper," 5 complimentary tickets for every group of 20 people and the opportunity for one person to win a new vehicle from Country Ford of Southaven.
In addition, Union Mission will sell $10 tickets for Xplorers home games throughout the month of June, from which the mission will receive 50 percent of the proceeds.
The Union Mission is dedicated to serving the physical, spiritual and emotional needs to homeless and hurting men and women throughout the Memphis metropolitan area, with the ultimate goal of helping them become self-sufficient.
One of its biggest outreach programs is meal service. The mission serves food to 50 to 75 homeless people and to an average of 50 "program clients," men who are in the mission's drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, at every meal time.
"Our philosophy is not âgive a hand-out' but âgive a hand up,'" mission Director of Food Services A.C. Curtis said. "Sometimes we find ourselves doing just that, but there is a verse in the Bible that says, âBlessed is the man who doesn't forget the poor.'
"There is another verse that says, âGive, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men pour into your lap. For with the same measure that you give, it will be measured back to you.' Meaning, you are going to receive back the blessings that you give. We believe that you will blessed when you serve."
