Manchester Wolves News Release

MANCHESTER, N.H. (May 20, 2004) - The Manchester Wolves (arenafootball2) are back home again and well rested. Tomorrow night (Friday, May 21) the Wolves tackle the red-hot Birmingham Steeldogs in a big-time af2 battle at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Wolves are looking forward to facing the Steeldogs on their home turf after playing four of their first six games of the season on the road. The show begins at 5 p.m. with a special pre-game concert courtesy of Spiderbiteradio.com, featuring popular local music acts, SED and Josh Logan. The action inside the arena kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for tomorrow night's game, so make plans to visit the Verizon for a night of great football and great entertainment.

The Wolves (3-3) face a tough task ahead against Birmingham, winners of five straight games. The Steeldogs are currently 5-1 on the season and are the No. 5-ranked team in the af2 according to the most recent weekly af2 Coaches' Poll. Birmingham is led by its head coach, former University of Alabama standout running back Bobby Humphrey. Humphrey recently became the league's all-time winningest coach after guiding the Steeldogs to a 55-34 home win last Friday against Florida. As a team, the Birmingham offense ranks fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 54.7 points per game. FB/LB Dontae Walker is a threat on the ground with 98 yards rushing on the season (4th-best in the af2). WR/DB Detronn Harris is dangerous in the air with a team-high 30 catches for 488 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensive specialist Anthony Jordan will be another player to watch out for. Jordan leads the league in interceptions with seven.

The Wolves are led by quarterback Chris Sanders, who has found his comfort zone in recent weeks. In the Wolves last two games (both victories), Sanders has thrown 11 touchdowns with no interceptions. Manchester will also need a stellar effort out of their defense. Former New England Patriot Vernon Crawford's return to action should help in that department. The Wolves secondary has also been strong, led by Allistair Sebastien (3 INTs, 10 pass breakups) and Marvin Owens (3 INTs, 6 pass breakups).

"Birmingham is a real solid, well-coached football team," Wolves Head Coach Rik Richards said. "Their coach Bobby Humphrey has been in this league a long time and knows how to win. Our guys are ready, though, and I believe they'll respond to the challenge."

A special FREE dance team poster, presented courtesy of The Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News, will be distributed to 1,000 fans outside the Verizon Wireless Arena along with a complimentary copy of the newspaper.

In addition to the poster giveaway, all fans through the doors will receive a FREE pair of Bangstix, courtesy of Talarico Dealerships, 95.7 WZID and Verizon Wireless.
