Slammers Walk Off On Florence
September 1, 2023 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
JOLIET, IL - The Florence Y'alls, presented by Towne Properties, played a tight game yet again against the Joliet Slammers, but Tyler Depreta-Johnson sent Joliet's fans home happy with an RBI-single in the ninth inning for a 3-2 Slammers victory Friday night at Duly Health and Care Field.
Facing new pitcher Kent Klyman, Joliet's bats immediately ambushed the lefty. Matt McGarry - who finished the night a double shy of the cycle - smacked a triple to dead centerfield to begin the inning. Florence brought in Ray Zuberer as an extra infielder, but it did not matter when Depreta-Johnson smacked a ball to deep center for the walk-off hit.
Joliet (44-40) had multiple leads throughout the game, but the Y'alls (38-56) answered each time. In the first inning, Joliet strung together three hits off of Carter Spivey, including an RBI-hit for Matthew Warketin for the early 1-0 lead. Florence answered in the fourth after a leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI-single for Harrison DiNicola.
DiNicola came through again in the sixth inning. With the Y'alls trailing 2-1 thanks to a McGarry solo home run, DiNicola smacked another single to score a run to knot the game at two runs apiece. The score stood until the walk-off in the ninth.
Spivey worked six innings and allowed two runs in the no-decision. His final start of the season included seven strikeouts. His counterpart, Cam Aufderheide, departed the game after 2/3 of an inning with an injury. Ian Delleman picked up the slack with a career-high four 2/3 innings of bulk relief, allowing both of the Y'alls runs. Chandler Brierley followed with two 2/3 innings of scoreless work, and David Harrison earns the win thanks to his scoreless ninth inning.
The win for the Slammers is their fifth in a row against the Y'alls, and they have won all four against Florence at Duly Health and Care Field. Florence has lost two games in a row after the loss to Schaumburg yesterday.
The two teams square off for game two of the series tomorrow, Saturday, September 2, 2023 for a 6:05 PM CDT/7:05 PM EDT first pitch. Ryan Watson takes the ball for the Y'alls, opposed by Cole Cook. It is the second-to-last game of the regular season. Neither team qualified for the 2023 Frontier League postseason.
