WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things faced off against the Joliet Slammers on Sunday, July 5 in an afternoon game to decide their three-game series. Despite an outstanding pitching performance from Wild Things starter Luke Wilkins, Washington suffered a 7-5 loss after the Slammers scored five runs in the top of the ninth. Reliever Matt Purnell was given the loss, while Slammers pitcher Patrick Dyer earned the win.

It was Joliet who got out to an early lead after center fielder Charlie White scored on a sacrifice following his leadoff triple. White's triple would be the last recorded hit for Joliet until the fourth inning as Wilkins began to settle in by putting out ten consecutive Slammers batters.

While Wilkins was in command on the mound, the Wild Things batters began to heat up with three runs in the third inning. Center fielder Danny Poma reached base with a leadoff single, later scoring on a throwing error. The Wild Things continued to score runs with third baseman Carter Bell adding an RBI single to take the lead. Wild Things left fielder David Popkins added to that with a solo home run later in the at bat.

Washington gave up a run in the top of the fifth inning, but struck back thanks to the bat of second baseman Matt Peters. Peters extended the lead with a bases loaded RBI single that scored third baseman Carter Bell and right fielder Scott Kalamar.

Wilkins went eight solid innings before he was replaced in the top of the ninth. Following the pitching substitution, the Slammers went on to score five runs to take the lead at 7-5. Washington was not able to make up the runs in the bottom half of the ninth as the Joliet Slammers earned the 7-5 comeback victory.
