Slammers Rally Late to Beat Washington 7-5

Washington, PA- Down by three runs in the ninth inning, the Joliet Slammers (20-25) rally against the Washington Wild Things (19-26) to score five late runs and win 7-5 on Sunday.

The Slammers got on the board in the first inning against pitcher Luke Wilkins. CF Charlie White led off the game with a triple. DH Nate Roberts drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Slammers led 1-0 after the top of the first.

The Wild Things put up a three spot against pitcher Andrew Strenge in the third inning. CF Daniel Poma led off with a single. He moved to third on a RF Scott Kalamar base-knock. With one out and 3B Carter Bell up, Kalamar broke for second. Catcher Jack Cleary's throw got away from Max Casper, allowing Poma to score. Kalamar scampered to third and later scored on an RBI single by Bell, who was thrown out trying to steal with LF David Popkins up. With the bases empty, Popkins crushed a solo home run over the right field fence, giving the Wild Things the 3-1 lead.

The Slammers got one of those runs back in the fifth inning. LF Phil Bates singled to lead off. RF Hunter Ridge smacked a single to right to drive in Bates, but was thrown out trying to advance to second. The Slammers trailed 3-2 after the top of the fifth.

The Wild Things answered with a five-run bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded 2B Matt Peters singled to drive in two and run Andrew Strenge from the game. Tyler Murphy came in and got the Slammers out of the inning. Murphy combined with Patrick Dyer to shut out the Wild Things for the rest of the game.

Down by three in the ninth inning, the Slammers rallied. Roberts and Rodriguez both walked, while 3B Mike Garza singled to load the bases against closer Matt Purnell. LF Phil Bates brought home a pair with a two-RBI single to right, making it a 5-4 game. With one out and Cleary up, a wild pitch allowed Garza and Bates to move up a bag putting a pair in scoring position. Cleary lined the ball to short centerfield. Poma dove, trying to make the catch, but the ball shot underneath his glove and rolled to the warning track. Jack Cleary sprinted around the bases, scoring on the error and putting Joliet up 7-5.

After allowing the first two batters to reach, closer Navery Moore shut the door on the Wild Things. With nobody out Poma tried to lay down a bunt, popping it up to Moore, who doubled off the lead baserunner Wobrock. He got Kalamar to ground out to first to close out the game. Patrick Dyer (0-1) who pitched the eighth inning, earned the win. Bates drove in two with two hits, scoring twice to earn Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game honors.

Notes: This is the Slammers first win they've trailed entering the ninth inning...They are now 1-23 when trailing after the eighth frame... Washington left 15 runners on base while Joliet only left two... Mike Garza had six hits in the series...The Slammers tagged Purnell for four earned runs after he had only allowed three prior to the ninth inning the entire year... The Slammer are now 2-5 on Sundays...They've scored four or more runs in the ninth inning twice in the past week...The Slammers are back in action on Tuesday against the Frontier Greys...First pitch is at 7:05 and you can catch the action on http://www.jolietslammers.com/gameday/slammervision/.
