Slammers Drop to Beach Bums Despite Strong Outing from Carden

Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers (18-23) suffered their second consecutive loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums (27-12) on a chilly Wednesday night despite a strong outing by starting pitcher Michael Carden.

It was a pitcher's dual for the first three innings of play between lefties Ian MacDougall and Carden. MacDougall didn't allow a base runner through three frames, while Carden only allowed one Beach Bum to reach second while playing stellar defense.

The Beach Bums scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning. RF Reggie Lawson led off the inning with an infield single. He traded places with CF Geg Harisis when he grounded into a fielder's choice. Catcher Jake Rhodes hit a bouncing ball to first that was misplayed by Nate Robets, allowing Harisis to score from. The Slammers escaped the inning with a double play, down 1-0.

The Slammers offense sputtered through the first five innings. They put a runner on second in the fifth with one out, but could not score. But Joliet got on the board in the sixth. 2B Max Casper reached on an infield single in the sixth. With two outs, MacDougall's throw to first ended up in the stands, allowing Casper to reach third. 1B Nate Roberts singled to right, driving in Casper and tying the game at 1-1.

In the visitors half of the seventh Traverse City was able to regain the lead. RF Reggie Lawson walked as did CF Greg Harisis. C Jake Rhodes grounded one to Max Casper at second and the Slammers were able to get the force out setting up runners at the corners. With SS Sam Bumpers up, Michael Carden's pitch was in the dirt, Reggie Lawson broke for home and scored.

The Beach Bums added to their lead in the eighth. 2B Alex Tomasovich singled, as did 1B Yazy Arbelo chasing Carden from the game. Kevin McNorton came in and gave up a single to LF Brandon Jacobs that scored Tomasovich, making the score 3-1 Traverse City.

The Slammers' bats would go quietly in the final two frames as Andrew Brockett came in for the second time in as many games to end the night. Ian MacDougall was awarded the win (6-1). Michael Carden was handed the loss (1-0) and Brockett's outing earned him save number fourteen. Carden was also our Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game. He pitched seven and two thirds innings, giving up three runs, two of those earned, walked one and struck out three The Slammers will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow night in the final game of the series. Notes: Michael Carden didn't allow an earned run through the first six innings he pitched... The Slammers were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position... Phil Bates has a six-game hitting streak...Nate Roberts has an RBI in his last five games...The Slammers are now 0-5 against the Beach Bums, but have a winning record against the rest of the Frontier League...For the first time this year, two left-handed pitchers started the game.
