
Rascals Fall to Belters 8-4

Normal, IL - The Rascals (22-18) lost 8-4 to the Normal CornBelters (24-17) on Wednesday, July 1 at the Corn Crib. The Rascals have lost three straight games.
RHP Joe Scanio (L, 5-4) started and took the loss for the Rascals; he has received the decision in all nine of his appearances this year. The righty retired the first six men he faced but surrendered four runs in 5.0 innings. He allowed seven hits while striking out two batters and issuing no walks.
The Rascals took a 1-0 lead on a 3B Taylor Ard solo homerun in the second inning. Ard has homered in back-to-back games and has 12 this season. He is tied with Normal's Patrick McKenna for the Frontier League lead in homeruns.
In the bottom of the third inning, Scanio hit Ozney Guillen with a pitch, the first Belter to reach against base. Cameron Monger then hit a two-run homer.
To lead off the fourth inning, Aaron Dudley and Richard Lucas each singled to put men on the corners. Sam Judah then hit the third straight single and drove in a run.
The Belters extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth frame when McKenna and Dudley hit consecutive two-out doubles.
In the sixth, LF Brian Hansen reached on a fielder's choice with two outs and C Josh Ludy singled. After a double steal, DH Danny Canela was intentionally walked. Ard then hit a two-run single to centerfield.
Mark Micowski and Santiago Chirino each hit infield singles to open the seventh inning. Dudley then hit a three-run homer, taking a 7-3 lead.
Ludy hit a solo shot, his seventh of the season and second of the series, in the top of the eighth.
Monger hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning, his second of the game and third of the series.
Stephen Frey made his first start of the season for Normal. He gave up just one run, two hits, and a walk. He punched out six batters over 4.0 innings and received a no-decision. Cole Brocker (W, 1-0) added 1.1 inning and earned his first win of the year. Horatio Acosta surrendered two runs in 1.2 inning of relief.
RHP Will Schierholz was the first man out of the bullpen and tossed 1.0 scoreless inning. RHP Zeb Sneed surrendered three runs and three hits in just 0.1 inning. RHP Zac Treece threw 0.2 inning, and RHP Marc Rutledge allowed one run in 1.0 frame.
The Rascals and Normal CornBelters conclude their four-game series on Thursday, July 2 at the Corn Crib at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
