(Sauget, IL) - The Gateway Grizzlies took game three of the season-opening series with the Joliet Slammers on Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark.

The Grizzlies got their bats rolling early in the 8-4 victory. After an impressive showing at the plate Saturday, Jerod Yakubik hit an RBI single to start the scoring. Immediately afterwards, Landon Hernandez launched his second home run of the series, making it 4-0 Gateway at the end of the first.

Joliet battled back in the third when Abel Nieves doubled into left field bringing around catcher Ben Hewitt. In the next at-bat, Zach Mandelblatt cut the lead in half, sending Jimmy Waters home from third base. They added another run in the fourth when Hewitt singled to make it 4-3.

But the Grizzlies lineup continued to dominate in the later innings. In the fifth, after another run had already scored, Landon Hernandez hit his second homer of the game, extending the lead to five runs, and giving him six RBI in the game.

Jeremy Tietze went four and one-third innings for Joliet, surrendering eight runs and nine hits in the effort, while Geoff Brown, Chase Doremus, and Daniel Carela finished off the contest.

An off-day is scheduled for Monday, and the Slammers return to Silver Cross Field for the 2012 home opener against Traverse City on Tuesday night. Fans can catch the action live on AM 1340 WJOL, and streaming live online at www.wjol.com, with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
