GCS Ballpark - Sauget, IL

Game #4 - Road Game #4 (1-2), (1-2)

Last time out...

The Gateway Grizzlies beat the Joliet Slammers for the first time on Saturday night, taking game two of the series 8-0. After John Shelby doubled to lead off the fourth inning, Jerod Yakubik launched a single to start the scoring. The Grizzlies added three more runs in the fourth off a Landon Hernandez double, and a Hector Pellot throwing error. Joliet committed four errors in the game. Gateway pulled away in the fifth with another three runs, two of which came when Shelby homered for his second hit of the night. They would extend the lead in the sixth when miscommunication on the field by Joliet allowed a run to score, making it 8-0. In his regular season debut with the Slammers, Steven Maxwell surrendered seven through four and one-third innings. Jim Schult, Chuck Lukanen and Brian Smith completed the effort for Joliet. Tim Brown was credited with the win for Gateway.

For Starters...

RHP Jeremy Tietze started his professional career in 2011 with the Slammers in the bullpen but pitched so well the team moved him to the starting rotation near the end of the season. He finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in 32 appearances, three of them starts. Then in the postseason he went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts. The Slammers won both his outings in the playoffs. Tietze is an alum of Angelo State University.

Three's Company...

Catcher Ben Hewett, Outfielder Zach Mandelblatt and infielder Abel Nieves all have three-game hitting streaks to start the season.

Shutout....

Last night's 8-0 loss was the first time the Slammers have been shutout since August 16, 2011 when the Washington Wild Things knocked off Joliet by a score of 5-0. It's the sixth time the Slammers have been shutout in their history.

Rubber match...

Today's game against Gateway is the rubber match of the three-game series. Joliet went 5-6 in rubber matches in 2011.

Rare errors...

The four errors committed by the Slammers last night matches the franchise record for errors in a game. The Slammers recorded four errors in a game twice in 2011.

Mandel-BOMB, Mandel BOMB!

Zach Mandelblatt's two home runs Friday night matched the Slammers' record for most home runs in one game. The last time a Slammers player hit two home runs in one game was September 2, 2011 when Josh Flores and David Fox both did it against Rockford.

Debuts...

Saturday night was the professional debut of RHP Steven Maxwell, who took the loss in the game. Friday night saw the professional debuts of RHP Chase Doremus, LHP Geoff Brown and OF Jimmy Waters. Doremus struck out the side to leave the bases loaded in his inning of work. Brown tossed a perfect seventh. Meanwhile Waters went 0-2. He and Trevor Willis are looking for their first pro hits.

Triple-A talent...

The Slammers boast five players who have played at Triple-A level during their careers, one step below the major leagues. DH Erik Lis played for the Rochester Red Wings of the International League in 2010. Utility man Abel Nieves played for the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League in 2006, 2009 and 2010. RHP Gaby Hernandez has played for the Albuquerque Isotopes, Tacoma Rainiers, Omaha Royals, Charlotte Knights and Reno Aces during his four years at the Triple-A level. RHP Amalio Diaz pitched for the Salt Lake Bees of the PCL in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile RHP Tommy Mendoza also pitched for Salt Lake in 2009 and 2010.
