Miners Lose Close One as London Gets First Win

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners lost a close one tonight as the London Rippers defeated the Miners 3-2. Designated hitter Zach Larson of London hit a two out solo home run off Miners reliever Ryan Quigley in the top of the ninth to give the Rippers the 3-2 lead and eventual win.

Shawn Gilblair got the start tonight for the Miners as he allowed a run in the top of the first. Right fielder David Christensen hit a one out single to bring in short stop Justino Cuevas. The Miners came back in the bottom of the first with a run brought in courtesy of Sean Coughlin. The Miners took the lead in the bottom of the third as Matt Fields hit a sacrifice fly with one out off starting pitcher David Francis.

London tied the game in the top of the sixth with a past ball by Sean Coughlin. Gabriel Shaw was charged with the run. He threw two innings in relief tonight. Ryan Quigley came on in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Quigley had four strikeouts in his two innings of relief and one hit - the game winner by David Christensen.

The Miners hit the road tomorrow as they will be in Evansville, Indiana to take on the Evansville Otters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35. Make sure to tune in to US 97.7 at 6:15 for the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola.
