College Park Skyhawks News Release
OSHKOSH, WI - The College Park Skyhawks used a balanced night on offense and a season-high game from Cat Barber to upset the No. 1 ranked Wisconsin Herd on the road Thursday night, 126-118. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 17-15 on the season. Video highlights of the game can be foundÃÂ here.
In a back-and-forth game, Wisconsin jumped out to an early 12-point lead, but the Skyhawks responded and took a 62-53 advantage into halftime. The Herd went on a 12-0 run to tie it up in the third and the two teams traded baskets to open the fourth. College Park went up 12 with four minutes to play before the Herd went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to four. Kenny Gabriel connected on a three, but Wisconsin refused to go away easily and scored four quick points to make it a three-point game again. Barber used his speed to finish a layup before the Skyhawks won a jump ball, setting up a Jordan Sibert breakaway layup to help seal the deal.
Barber led all scorers with a season-high 33 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists. Sibert finished with 25 points, 14 which came in the first half, while Marcus Derrickson added 14 points. College Park's bench came up big with Kenny Gabriel scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 boards. Nick Ward added 10 points while Armoni Brooks added nine points and eight rebounds. Mark Ogden, Jr. also neared a double-double with nine points and seven boards to round out the scoring effort.
"Wisconsin came out guarding (me) hard," said Barber. "Jordan (Sibert) picked it up when they were focused on me and we all had the mentality that we weren't going to lose this game. We knew we had to lock in and close out the game to get the win. The win boosts our confidence, but it doesn't stop here."
The Skyhawks head home to take on the Delaware Blue Coats on Feb. 7 for their Black History Month game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Gateway Center Arena @ College Park.ÃÂ For more information on the Skyhawks inaugural season and to register for updates, please visitÃÂ CPSkyhawks.com.
