Skyhawks End Season with Loss at Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Al. - The College Park Skyhawks (15-17) were defeated by the Birmingham Squadron (11-21), 122-120, in the final game of the regular season on Saturday night in Birmingham. The Skyhawks finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and did not qualify for the 2023 NBA G League Playoffs.

Brandon Williams led the team with a career-high 40 points (17-26 FG, 3-7 3FG) in 39 minutes. Chris Silva (18 points, 10 rebounds) also recorded his team-leading 15th double-double in 28 minutes. Donovan Williams finished with 25 points and eight rebounds, his 11th 20-point outing of the year.

The Skyhawks dropped the first quarter, 27-21. Brandon Williams led the team with seven points early, while Donovan Williams added six points and three rebounds in the opening period.

The Squadron took the second quarter, 32-28, to take a 59-49 lead into the locker room at half. Brandon Williams (13 points, 5-10 FG) and Donovan Williams (12 points, 5-8 FG) continued to lead the Skyhawks in scoring.

The Skyhawks went on a 10-2 run early in the third quarter to cut the lead to 63-61, but James Kelly Sr. answered with a bucket and-the-foul. Brandon Williams followed with a layup and-the-foul of his own on the following possession to trim the lead to 66-64. Williams scored 11 points in the third quarter, but the Skyhawks still trailed by a score of 93-86 going into the final period.

The fourth quarter went to the Skyhawks, 34-29 behind 14 points from Brandon Williams. Despite two late three-pointers from Williams, the Skyhawks were unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 122-120.

The Squadron were led Kelan Martin, who finished with 27 points in 32 minutes. Malcolm Hill chipped in with 23 points, while Dereon Seabron recorded 19 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in 36 minutes.

College Park has wrapped up its second complete season since the College Park Skyhawks formed prior to the 2019-20 season. The Skyhawks opened the 2022-23 season with a 12-6 record in the Showcase Cup schedule, earning a spot in the Showcase Cup tournament for the first time in team history. After returning for the regular season, forwards A.J. Lawson (Dallas Mavericks, Dec. 26, 2022) and Jared Rhoden (Detroit Pistons, Dec. 26, 2022) earned respective NBA Call-Ups. In total, the Skyhawks had four NBA Call-Ups on the year, with Lawson also having signed a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in the year (Nov. 16, 2022) and Chris Silva earning two 10-day contracts with the Mavericks (Jan. 31, 2023). Only the Sioux Falls Skyforce had more players earn NBA Call-Ups with six. The Skyhawks also set a team record with four sellout games over the course of the season.
