Skyforce to Host Community Blood Drive

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Dec. 28, 2011) - The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that they will host a community blood drive on Friday, Jan. 6 from 12-6 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena. Anyone donating blood will receive two free Upper Empire tickets to that night's home game against the Iowa Energy. Food and refreshments will also be provided courtesy of the Sioux Falls Arena.
"Each year this event has helped hundreds of patients in our community at a time when blood is needed the most," said Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken Versteeg. "We consistently see a 25% decrease in blood donations during the holidays. This challenge between the two departments provides the public a chance to say "thank you" to police and fire personnel and make a significant impact in many lives."
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and the Sioux Falls Police Department will be competing to see which department can recruit the most blood donors for Community Blood Bank in the 17th Annual "Heroes Behind the Badges" blood donation campaign.
The competition between the two departments kicks off December 27 and will run through January 6. The public is encouraged to visit either Sanford Medical Center (333-6444) or Avera McKennan Hospital (322-7111) donor rooms and designate their blood donation to the department of their choice. Donors can choose a specially designed "police" or "fire" t-shirt (while supplies last) and receive a certificate for an appetizer at Texas Roadhouse.
The department credited with the most blood donations will contribute $350 to the service organization of their choice; second place will donate $150. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue has chosen Children's Home Society and the Sioux Falls Police Department has selected the Special Olympics of South Dakota. Last year the Sioux Falls Police Department (432 units) took a narrow victory over Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (430 units).
